چکیده

Currently, the Internet is experiencing the grid accelerated file transfer phenomenon (swarming). It has gained immense popularity and dominance through BitTorrent and has thus far accounted for a substantial amount of the total Internet traffic. In this paper, we borrow ideas liberally from the literature to argue that the use of swarming protocol for traffic/content delivery within the wireless networking milieu is inefficient. We generalize the problem into the delivery of persistent bidirectional peer traffic in wireless hierarchical topology, and further argue that current approaches for fixnetwork augmented broadband wireless access (e.g. 802.11x) has left the problem ill-addressed. A novel system architecture is sketched to rectify such a shortcoming. Hence, the purpose of this short position paper is to stimulate ideas and proposals that may result into important avenues of future research. Keywords— swarming, cross-layer design, wireless communication architecture

Bandwidth Impacts of Localizing Peer-to-Peer IP Video Traffic in Access and Aggregation Networks

This paper examines the burgeoning impact of peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic IP video traffic. High-quality IPTV or Internet TV has high-bandwidth requirements, and P2P IP video could severely strain broadband networks. A model for the popularity of video titles is given, showing that some titles are very popular and will often be available locally; making localized P2P attractive for video titles. ...

Flow-Level Upstream Traffic Behavior in Broadband Access Networks: DSL versus Broadband Fixed Wireless

In this paper, we present flow-level upstream traffic behavior based on data collected from Broadband Fixed Wireless (BFW) and Digital Subscriber Link (DSL) access services. The study involves data collected using Cisco’s NetFlow tools on both access networks. The observations indicate that a number of applications based on peer-to-peer (P2P) concepts are creating most of the upstream traffic. ...

A Comparative Study of TCP/IP Traffic Behavior in Broadband Access Networks ?

In recent years, broadband access has become the norm in the Internet world. As of now, not much has been said about the behavior of traffic on these access networks. Also, the common assumption has been that the traffic behavior on one broadband access network is not very different from another. In this paper, we present an analysis of TCP/IP traffic data that has been collected from two broad...

FiWi Access Networks Based on Next-Generation PON and Gigabit-Class WLAN Technologies: A Capacity and Delay Analysis (Extended Version)

Current Gigabit-class passive optical networks (PONs) evolve into next-generation PONs, whereby high-speed 10+ Gb/s time division multiplexing (TDM) and long-reach wavelength-broadcasting/routing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) PONs are promising near-term candidates. On the other hand, next-generation wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on frame aggregation techniques will levera...

Characterization of BitTorrent Traffic in a Broadband Access Network

BitTorrent as one of the leading P2P file sharing applications has dominant traffic in broadband access networks. In this paper we present the main characteristics of BitTorrent traffic based on actual measurements taken from a commercial network. Analysis results at both applicationand flow-levels are presented and discussed.
